Why We Need the Project
Knowing that Han-geul is a scientific and creative alphabet system, Korean people have been very proud of their writing system. Though it may haven been an excellent alphabet system in the era where writing on paper matters, they have to prove that their alphabet system is equally excellent in the information age where their language and alphabet system are processed by computers.
A language system that cannot be properly computerized wouldn't find its raison d'etre in the knowledge-based information society. Also, as the language of a nation is its people's spirit, the loss of their language will inevitably be led to the collapse of the nation. By the same token, if you solely depend upon technologically advanced countries for building database of your language, that can result in ruining your mother tongue. It is in this sense that this project should be carried out without depending on others.
In order to preserve and further develop Han-geul, the soul of Korean people, and make it one of the leading global writing systems, it is necessary to provide information in the Korean language not just for Koreans but for all the information-oriented people across the world. In the same context, it is also crucial that Koreans have the system in which information from advanced countries written in a foreign language such as English is automatically translated into their language. That is why this project of building the KLIOP is considered as one of the top priorities for Korean people who live in the age of information.
