1. Objectives of the Project

One of the priorities facing Koreans today concerning their language is to ensure efficient and standardized use of the language on the scientific basis. For this, we need to develop the theories and technologies for information processing that can meet the characteristics of the Korean language. We believe that by achieving this we can globalize the advanced knowledge and technologies on the Korean language, efficiently meeting the demands from the information society. On the basis of the achievements from it, Korean people will be able to play an active role in the fiercely competitive global IT industries and realize an advanced information culture in an independent way.

Almost all the countries with advanced information processing systems have established a basic language database of their own language. They create from it efficient policies on education and language and a high level of productivity in information processing.

In Korea, too, information systems are being built rapidly at national level. Korean people are well aware that building a full-scale, high-quality national language database is essential for easy and efficient handling of the vast information pouring in day to day.

A product of the historical changes and developments, the Korean language consists of many regional dialects including those used in the North Korea and by the Koreans living in the rest of the world. What is needed at this stage is to lay a foundation for in-depth research and the integration of culture and language among the Koreans across the world by collecting language data. In the context, developing a corpus of Korean language in all forms is believed to make a great contribution to computer-assisted processing of language in a specialized and efficient way. It, together with the development of tools to ensure effective use of language data, will also be a precious resource for the study of the Korean language.

The goal of this project is to establish a national corpus of Korean language that is comparable both in quality and size with the world's greatest national corpora such as BNC (British National Corpus). To attain the goal, a top priority should be to build a national infrastructure for KLIOP in a systematic and consistent way. Also included are efforts to develop a basic data and tools to be exploited in a wide area of our society, information processing, academic research, education, government policy, IT industry, publication industry as well as everyday language life.
